Passion for sale

During my last interview, they asked me, "Why did you choose us?"

I tried to make up some bullshit answer on the spot about their brand and all that, but the interviewer called me out on it, because yeah, I hadn't prepared for that question.

So I gave her the truth.

Why did I choose her company over any other company to apply to work at?
I didn't.
I didn't choose her company.

She chose.
She chose to call me back.

That's the difference.
The difference between her company and her competitors.

I'm tired of these bullshit lines.

I have enough trouble drinking the kool-aid when I'm being paid by the company, and you want me to start drinking it for the interview? Hell no.

I read a post on Fedi about how capitalism is basically prostitution, because everybody sells their bodies, especially if you're blue collar. They work your body to the bones until there's nothing left, and then they cast you aside unless you've got a union fighting for a decent retirement package or a cast of C-suiters with sound ethics (and it's practically a pre-req to not have sound ethics to be a C-suiter).

When you hire me, you're not just buying my skills, you're buying my passion. You're buying my dedication. I will dream about work when I'm off the clock and it will linger in my head long after I've moved on. It's a shame I can't charge rent on things that live on in my head, because otherwise Totes Isotoner and Waldenbooks and Walmart and Pampered Chef and loads of other places I used to work owe me years of it. (Well, shame for me, good for them.)

I worked for Walmart for eleven months (or was it thirteen? I can't remember), and you know what? I didn't drink the kool-aid, and my life probably would have been a lot easier if I had. Instead, they drove me to a mental health crisis. I still have bad dreams about my time at Walmart and it was more than a decade ago.

I'm shopping around for the highest bidder to buy me, and so far, I haven't had any takers.

Let's start the bidding at $20USD per hour.
Who wants a taste?
